Error 2: Opening \\.\LEGOTOWER1

Postby mokolodi1 » Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:50 pm

Hey there,

I am trying to run firmdl.bat to put the leJOS firmware onto my RCX. Unfortunately, every time I run it, I get this error:

Error 2: Opening \\.\LEGOTOWER1
Open failed: open failure, errno = 2

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, with Java 7. I saw that you should only use Java 1.5, so I installed Java 1.5 and am specifically calling it instead of my normal Java installation. (I edited the batch file.) I have tried just about everything I can think of to fix this: switching out the RCX, switching from a 2.0 RCX to a 1.0 RCX, switching out the Tower, installing the drivers for both the first RIS and then RIS 2.0, all to no avail. I've also made sure to set all of my environmental variables in the command prompt. I feel like I'm doing some really obvious thing wrong!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Teo

Hi Teo,

I'd like to help, but I'm afraid that I've forgotten a lot of the configuration steps I used to make it work.

I'm running the same version of Windows as you. When I run firmdl.bat, the tower light goes on, but I get the following error:
Code: Select all
C:\leJOS_3.0\bin>firmdl.bat
read firmware srec
  100%
Installing firmware
Loading native libs
Tower error: bad ir link
Does your tower light go on?

As far as the version of Java:
Code: Select all
C:\leJOS_3.0\bin>java -version
java version "1.7.0_07"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_07-b11)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 23.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing)

And yet I found a way to make it work in Eclipse! I found and installed an RCX leJOS thing that put an icon on the Eclipse toolbar and when I click the icon the firmware downloads successfully. So it will work. And being able to program in Eclipse has turned out to have some advantages. I was reluctant to learn the overhead involved with Eclipse, but it really has some cool advantages, even for a novice/occasional programmer.

I'll noodle around in Eclipse to see if I can find the actual command string invoked by the toolbar icon. I'm also happy to share environment variables, etc. If I find anything definitive, I'll post it. If you know where to go looking, just let me know. I own three RCX bricks and they work perfectly fine for a lot of the things I do, so I understand the desire to get it all configured under Windows 7.
