new goodies for the LeJOS site...

Postby pEhrlich » Thu Jun 04, 2009 12:00 pm

Hi everyone

I'm going to become the new webadmin for the site. I'm planning a bunch of changes to make the site and forum sweet looking and very powerful as a learning resource, troubleshooting guide, and code repository. Right now I'm still brainstorming, I'll probably be able to start doing major work in July..

Enough talk, Im looking for your help in designing the new features. Here's a few ideas, but what else do you want?
- code syntax highlighting in posts
- Detailed wiki-style FAQ
- Code repository, where people can upload their code for anyone to use, comment, and possibly rate.

And finally, I'm gonna suggest a new best practice. I'm moderator or anything, but how about we start putting [SOLVED] on all our threads when we resolve them?

Welcome, Peter! Those all sound like excellent ideas and I'm looking forward to these changes.

I'm unfamiliar with Wiki projects out there, but we need one with a captcha feature or some other anti-spamming mechanism, otherwise it is a major pain with constant spam takeover.

I'm very excited about this feature. We should allow people to upload model files (LDraw or Lego's), photograph steps to build robots, and to include optional links to Youtube (there are already many leJOS robots on Youtube).

Sounds good to me.

I suggest using the Sourceforge managed phpBB rather than managing it ourselves because it solves the email server problem we currently face. That can be set up right from the Sourceforge project management page. Migrating the current phpBB database over is pretty easy with the back-end tools.

sounds good. I can see you're describing almost a mini-mocpages, which would be pretty sweet, and certainly make LeJOS look awesome, which it well deserves 8)

Another idea - a shoutbox and/or chat room. (live support!) Any thoughts on if one would be preferable to the other?

That's up to you. I don't have much experience with either of these. My guess is a chatroom would remain pretty empty since we get sporadic visitors in different timezones.
