my project idea and need your help

hi all
i'm new member here in this great forum

i'm trying to build my first robot (chemical robot) that can detect if any toxic gas and sends alarm to alarm students in lab to take the safty rules if they not do

can anyone give me a suggestion and comment about this idea and what sensors i need to use ?

Within the limits of the standard nxt kit sensors you could use a light sensor to detect the gas (if it is visible). Perhaps mount the sensor in a dark box with the led active, a reduction in light levels detected by the sensor signals the detection of the gas.

For other gasses you might need to cannibalise other electronics. For example I dont think it would be impossible to buy an off the shelf carbon monoxide detector and connect it to you nxt in such a way that it signals the nxt when it detects gas.
