Basic question about the firmware

I would know if every time I download a java program on the lejos the firmware is updated, so that every time I have to put the nxt in firmware update mode?
This is what I supposed by reading the documentation.

The NXT brick will stay in SAMBA mode as it's called until you upload the official LEGO firmware. So you can upload as many leJOS programs as you want without hitting the little reset button each time.

Oky. Where can I find the developer documentation of the JVM?
I need to check some response paramater because I have to implemnt a lejos library for digital filters.
