Replacing the IR tower

I have got an inbuilt IR port in my laptop and I was wondering there is a way I could use it instead of the chunky Lego IR tower to send programs to my rcx.

Proprietary protocol

LEGO says that they use a Proprietary protocol for IR communication. I guess you have to program at a very low level to achieve this If you are going to use different IR transmitter. I tried with a PDA and had no success.
