Also remember that good old odometry can get you a long way (well only a short way with any degree of accuracy - sorry bad joke). Handling sensor data that is less than perfect is just one of those things that anyone interested in robotics will have to deal with. The good news is that you can get some pretty good sensors at a very low cost these days (things like accelerometers and gyros were state of the art just a few years ago), and there is lots of stuff on how to process them that at one time would have been buried away in an academic journal...
