Enchanting for RCX

Postby everst » Sat Jan 26, 2013 9:58 pm

Just learned about Enchanting and am really excited to give it a try and hope to use with our elementary students this spring with NXT kits. Does Enchanting work with RCX kits? About half of our kits are still RCX.

Wonderful! I hope you like it.

I'm afraid not. While I have always aimed to support other sorts of robots and devices, I'd rather support one well than many poorly, and there is much left to do with the NXT.

[There is no reason it couldn't be done, provided that one could make drivers work for the RCX's USB tower on modern, 64-bit computers, and I'd be happy to help anyone who'd like to attempt to modify Enchanting for this purpose.]

Cheers,

Clinton: are you aware of the various restrictions that leJOS for the RCX had (and still has)? For example, there is no garbage collection. Not sure, how easy it would be to port enchanting to the RCX due to these limitations.

Oh dear. No, I wasn't aware of that. (I've never actually used leJOS for the RCX, now that you mention it). I'll agree, then, that Enchanting wouldn't work without simplification or memory constraints of some sort, things which it hasn't been designed for.

I was not aware of any constraints like this, is there a getting started guide or some kind of basic Q & A where I can find out more?

Hi peteraj.

If you are asking for help in using Java with the RCX, I'd suggest taking a looking around the leJOS site here, where they have information on the RCX and a set of forums for it, where I'm sure they could answer more detailed questions you have.

If you are asking about Enchanting for the RCX, such a thing does not exist at this time.

Cheers,
