Boot lock

Hello,

my NXT locks on the startup screen after rebooting and throws an exception after some minutes.

Exception 16
@ 65:8
@ 90:1

I'm on lejos version 0.9.1. The same problem appeared in this thread, but there weren't solutions that worked:

nxjdebugtool -di /opt/lejos_nxt/bin/StartUpText.nxd -c -m 16 65 8

and post the output (adjust the paths of course).

Also make sure, you have the latest leJOS (0.9.1-3) installed on the PC and on the NXT. (You will have to use the button hidden in the hole under the USB port).
Also, are you sure it's the start menu that crashes and not a program that you have set as default with auto run turned on?

If I remember correctly, the only time the start menu crashed with a null pointer exception, the bluetooth module of the NXT was broken. It seems like this the case for your NXT as well.

The class number 16 refers to:
java.lang.NullPointerException (NullPointerException.java)

The method number 65 refers to:
lejos.nxt.startup.GraphicStartup.setAddress()V (GraphicStartup.java)

PC 8 refers to:
line 442 in GraphicStartup.java

I think that I have installed the latest version, I have just upgraded yesterday from sourceforge. Where can I find the complete version number?
It shouldn't be due to an installed programm, because I have reflashed the NXT multible times and deleted all files.

Hopefully, this helps to solve the problem.

That tells me, that your bluetooth module is broken. I'm sorry if that is bad new. However, it does not seems to respond, which triggers the null pointer exception in the start menu.

First, I would try whether the original Lego firmware still runs and whether it is able to talk to the bluetooth module. If bluetooth doesn't work with that firmware, then I would call Lego and ask whether they replace the NXT. They have been pretty helpful with replacing NXTs with a broken display in the past. You might get a replacement NXT if you tell them that bluetooth is broken. You can flash the original Lego firmware using nxjflash -b.

I'm not sure what I would do next. If you want, I can try to fix the startmenu so that it starts even if the bluetooth module is broken. Then you can keep the NXT but you won't be able to use bluetooth.
However, I can't do that anytime soon. I have a lot of work right now.

Ok, I'll try what you suggested, hopefully LEGO will replace the NXT.
The idea with the modded start menu would work for a short time, but I think I couldn't go longtime without bluetooth. That's why I think, it wouldn't be worth the work.
