Bluetooth issue: MacBook and NXT UNSUCCESSFUL

Postby z00k » Sat Dec 26, 2009 12:19 pm

Hey guys,

I'm trying to pair my NXT with my MacBook over Bluetooth so I don't have to use the USB cable every time I upload new programs.

But it doesn't matter wich way I try to connect (search on the macbook for new devices and coonect OR search for new devices on the NXT and connect), it doesn't work.

Here is what I do:

- Turn on Bluetooth on my MacBook
- Turn on Bluetooth on my NXT
- Both are visible
- In the NXT menu I execute Bluetooth->Search and pair
- The MacBook is found so I select it
- It asks me to pair.. I select pair
- The NXT wants to set a pin so I set it to 0001
- A window on the MacBook pops up asking for the pin: 0001
- Everything looks fine: The MacBook Bluetooth settings say: Connected YES
- But the NXT says 'Please wait' for a few seconds and then switches to: UNSUCCESSFUL Press any key
- When the UNSUCCESSFUL shows up the connection status in my settings on the MacBook changes to: Connected NO

I also tried to connect by searching for the NXT on my MacBook. It's being found but it's the same problem: it can't connect

Am I doing anything wrong? I searched for this issue in the forum but couldn't find anything that matched my problem.

Thanks in advance

Pair from the Mac. The default pin for the NXT is 1234 and you are probably best using that (I'm not sure if you can actually change it on the NXT)...

Andy

PS Uploading is much faster using USB!

I tried that too of course. Here is what I did:

- Set the NXT visibility ON
- Searched for a new bt device on MacBook
- NXT is found and asks for the PIN (1234)
- The NXT is set up as a BT device but nothing happens
- The bt settings on the MacBook say: Connected NO

btw: I'm using leJOS 0.8.5 and Mac OS X 10.5.8 on the MacBook

I know that the uploading process is much faster when using USB, but I want to use BT for communication between apps on PC and NXT.

Thanks for your help

Hi,
I'm not sure that you will be connected at this point. What happens if you run nxjbrowse (after pairing)? Does the NXT show up? Other users seem to have this working on the Mac, but I'm not a Mac user so can't really help much more. Hopefully Shawn (or one of our other Mac users), will be along soon to help...

Andy

PS You may need to locate and delete and nxj.cache files that you may have...
PPS You could always get a PC ;-)

Dear z00k,

Andy is one of the most helpful developers so we all just kind of look the other way when he makes a terribly, absolutely awful bad joke!

Anyway, you need to configure things. I'm away from my nxt now but you can try

http://www.eng.buffalo.edu/~colinlea/Bluetooth_With_NXT.pdf

If that link fails for some reason, just google "mindstorms osx setup bluetooth" and look for something similar to the following (sorry for the formatting -- )

You
should
now
be
 paired

with
the
NXT.
This
is
not
the
same
thing
as
being
connected.
At
this
point
yoConnecting
requires
one
mto
‘Edit
serial
ports…’

Click
the
‘+’
to
add
a
serial
out.
By
default
the
device
service
should
be
‘DevB’.
If
it
is
 not,
change
the
service
type.

Anyway, you need to configure things.

This should do the trick http://www.eng.buffalo.edu/~colinlea/Bluetooth_With_NXT.pdf and looks clearer that what I used myself http://juju.org/articles/2006/08/01/mindstorms-nxt-bluetooth-on-osx

If that link fails for some reason, just google "mindstorms osx setup bluetooth"

Neither one is for snow-leopard though so if they don't work, I can't help until my new iMac arrives (hopefully without a cracked screen)

Hi Shawn,
Sad to see you are throwing good money after bad! Seriously enjoy your new Macbook...

Andy
PS That's a great link, I wonder if we should add it into the tutorials?

To be honest, it's for my wife who has Microsoft office ingrained in her brain and linux was annoying her endlessly. The i7 processor looks interesting performance/energy wise and Dell, Sony etc. didn't offer anything comparable form factor wise.

Do you mean the windows side of it? If you want that info for windows, let's add it. Otherwise, I'll take screen shots of setting up bluetooth on my new system and add them in.

Thanks a lot guys. I missed setting up the serial port.

Sorry for my late answer, but I was on vacation and for the first time: I left my notebook at home

Oh and btw: I'm really happy with my MacBook

This post also helped me (set Edit Serial Port from bluetooth NXT settings). Thanks!
Can you update documentation (just some note) at http://lejos.sourceforge.net/nxt/nxj/tu ... tedMac.htm

+1 on that! The "Edit Serial Port..."-part was the turning point for me.
